Not all hospices are alike. A few key questions help your family choose a provider you can trust.
What to look for in a hospice provider
Start by confirming the hospice is Medicare-certified, which ensures it meets federal quality and safety standards and qualifies for full coverage. Then check its star ratings and family-survey scores on Medicare's Care Compare tool. Ask how quickly the team responds after hours and on weekends, whether a nurse is available 24/7, and what disciplines are on staff (nurses, aides, social workers, chaplains, volunteers). Find out which of the four levels of care the hospice provides and where, and ask about its experience with your specific illness. A nonprofit versus for-profit status and length of time in your community can also signal stability.
Questions to ask before you enroll
Before signing, ask: How fast can you start care? Is a physician involved in my care plan? How do you handle pain and symptom emergencies at night? What inpatient or respite facilities do you partner with? Will I keep my own doctor? What bereavement support do you offer my family afterward? Also confirm there are no surprise charges beyond Medicare's small drug and respite costs. Trust your instincts during these conversations. If a hospice is evasive or slow to answer, keep looking.
