Quick answer

Medicare Plan F is the most comprehensive Medigap plan, covering every gap in Original Medicare including the Part B deductible. However, Plan F is closed to anyone who became Medicare-eligible on or after January 1, 2020. Those who qualified earlier can still buy or keep it, per Medicare.gov.

Plan F once covered 100% of Original Medicare's gaps, but it's now closed to newly eligible beneficiaries. Here's what that means for you.

What does Medicare Plan F cover?

Plan F is the most comprehensive Medigap plan available, covering virtually every out-of-pocket cost Original Medicare leaves behind. That includes the Part A hospital deductible and coinsurance, the Part B deductible, the 20% Part B coinsurance, Part B excess charges, skilled nursing facility coinsurance, blood, hospice coinsurance, and 80% of foreign travel emergencies up to plan limits. With Plan F, you typically pay nothing out of pocket for Medicare-covered services, no deductibles, no coinsurance. That all-inclusive coverage made it the most popular plan for decades. To see if you qualify, call 1-800-MEDIGAP (1-800-633-4427).

Why is Plan F being phased out?

Federal law (MACRA) prohibited Medigap plans from covering the Part B deductible for people newly eligible for Medicare starting January 1, 2020. Because Plan F covers that deductible, it's now closed to anyone who turned 65 or qualified for Medicare on or after that date. If you became eligible before 2020, you can still buy Plan F or keep your existing policy. Newly eligible enrollees typically choose Plan G instead, which offers nearly identical coverage minus the Part B deductible. Not sure which side of the date you fall on? Call 1-800-MEDIGAP and we'll confirm.

Frequently asked questions

Can I still get Plan F in 2026?+

Only if you became eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020. Those who qualified earlier can still enroll in or keep Plan F. Anyone who became eligible on or after that date cannot buy Plan F and typically chooses Plan G instead.

What's the difference between Plan F and Plan G?+

The only difference is the Part B deductible: Plan F covers it, Plan G does not. Otherwise the two plans are nearly identical. Because Plan F is closed to newly eligible beneficiaries, Plan G is now the top comprehensive choice for most people.

Should I keep my Plan F or switch?+

If you have Plan F, you can keep it, but as the pool shrinks, premiums may rise faster over time. Some enrollees switch to Plan G or high-deductible Plan F to save money. A licensed agent at 1-800-MEDIGAP can compare your options at no cost.

Does Plan F cover everything?+

Plan F covers all of Original Medicare's standard gaps, so you typically pay nothing out of pocket for Medicare-covered services. However, it does not cover prescription drugs (you need Part D) or extras like routine dental, vision, and hearing.

Is high-deductible Plan F available?+

Yes, high-deductible Plan F is available to those who were eligible for Medicare before 2020. It offers Plan F's benefits with a lower premium in exchange for a higher annual deductible. Call 1-800-MEDIGAP to compare it with standard Plan F.
