Plan F once covered 100% of Original Medicare's gaps, but it's now closed to newly eligible beneficiaries. Here's what that means for you.
What does Medicare Plan F cover?
Plan F is the most comprehensive Medigap plan available, covering virtually every out-of-pocket cost Original Medicare leaves behind. That includes the Part A hospital deductible and coinsurance, the Part B deductible, the 20% Part B coinsurance, Part B excess charges, skilled nursing facility coinsurance, blood, hospice coinsurance, and 80% of foreign travel emergencies up to plan limits. With Plan F, you typically pay nothing out of pocket for Medicare-covered services, no deductibles, no coinsurance. That all-inclusive coverage made it the most popular plan for decades. To see if you qualify, call 1-800-MEDIGAP (1-800-633-4427).
Why is Plan F being phased out?
Federal law (MACRA) prohibited Medigap plans from covering the Part B deductible for people newly eligible for Medicare starting January 1, 2020. Because Plan F covers that deductible, it's now closed to anyone who turned 65 or qualified for Medicare on or after that date. If you became eligible before 2020, you can still buy Plan F or keep your existing policy. Newly eligible enrollees typically choose Plan G instead, which offers nearly identical coverage minus the Part B deductible. Not sure which side of the date you fall on? Call 1-800-MEDIGAP and we'll confirm.
