Extra Help, also called the Low-Income Subsidy, can dramatically cut your Part D drug costs. Here is who qualifies and how to apply.
What Extra Help covers and who qualifies
Extra Help reduces or eliminates Part D premiums and deductibles and caps copays at low fixed amounts, roughly $5.10 for generics and $12.65 for brand-name drugs in 2026. To qualify, your income generally must fall under about 150% of the federal poverty level, roughly $23,940 a year for an individual, with countable resources under about $18,090. Limits are higher for married couples, and your home and car do not count as resources. If you already have Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income, or a Medicare Savings Program, you usually qualify automatically. Even if you are slightly over the limits, it is worth applying, because the rules have some flexibility.
How to apply for Extra Help
You can apply for Extra Help free, anytime, through the Social Security Administration online, by phone, or by mail, and there is no enrollment period to wait for. You will need basic income and resource information, such as bank statements and any retirement income. Once approved, the subsidy attaches to your Part D plan and your pharmacy copays drop right away. Because the income and resource math can be confusing, many seniors call 1-800-MEDIGAP (1-800-633-4427), where a licensed agent reviews your situation, estimates your eligibility, and helps you complete the application correctly.
