Routine dental is one of Original Medicare's biggest gaps. Here's what's excluded, what's covered, and how to get dental coverage.
What dental care does Medicare not cover?
Original Medicare (Parts A and B) does not cover routine dental services. That means no coverage for cleanings, exams, X-rays, fillings, crowns, root canals, extractions, dentures, or dental implants. This surprises many new enrollees who assume dental is included. The exclusion applies whether you see a dentist for preventive care or for a problem. Because dental work can be expensive, especially dentures and implants, planning ahead matters. If you want dental coverage, you'll typically need a Medicare Advantage plan that includes it or a separate standalone dental plan. When does Medicare cover dental?
There are narrow exceptions. Original Medicare covers dental services only when they're an integral part of a covered medical or hospital procedure. For example, Medicare may cover a dental exam before a kidney transplant or heart valve surgery, jaw reconstruction after an accident, or tooth extractions needed before radiation treatment for oral cancer. These are tied to a larger covered treatment, not routine care. Per Medicare.gov, Medicare has also begun covering limited dental services connected to certain other medical treatments. To find out whether your situation qualifies, call 1-800-MEDIGAP and a licensed agent will help.
How to get dental coverage with Medicare
You have two main paths. Many Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans include routine dental, often with an annual allowance for cleanings, fillings, and sometimes dentures, usually within a provider network. Alternatively, you can buy a standalone dental plan from a private insurer that works alongside Original Medicare or Medigap. Medigap itself does not add dental benefits, it pays Original Medicare's out-of-pocket costs. Choosing the right path depends on your dentist, budget, and how much dental work you expect. A licensed agent at 1-800-MEDIGAP can compare plans side by side for free. Call 1-800-633-4427.
