Wondering if you qualify for Medicare? Eligibility comes down to your age, work history, and health. Here is how to know.
Who is eligible for Medicare?
Three groups qualify for Medicare. First, people age 65 and older who are U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents who have lived in the country for at least five years. Second, people under 65 who have received Social Security Disability Insurance for 24 months. Third, people of any age with ALS (eligible the month benefits begin) or end-stage renal disease. Premium-free Part A depends on having 40 quarters of Medicare-taxed work, yours or a spouse's. If you are unsure where you stand, call 1-800-MEDIGAP for a free eligibility check.
What if I or my spouse did not work enough quarters?
If you have fewer than 40 quarters of Medicare-covered work, you can still get Part A, but you may pay a monthly premium, up to $518 in 2026, depending on your quarters. You can also qualify on a current, former, or deceased spouse's work record. Part B eligibility is not tied to work quarters, so you can enroll regardless, paying the standard premium. The rules can be confusing, so a licensed agent at 1-800-MEDIGAP can review your record and explain exactly what you will pay.
