Recovering from surgery or a hospital stay? Here is how to find short term rehab nearby and what Medicare pays.
What short term rehab provides
Short term rehab is goal-oriented recovery care, usually delivered in a skilled nursing facility (SNF), after surgery, a stroke, a fall, or another illness. It combines physical, occupational, and speech therapy with skilled nursing and help with daily activities. The aim is to restore strength and independence so you can return home safely, typically within days to a few weeks. To find well-rated short term rehab near you and confirm what your Medicare or Medigap plan covers, call 1-800-MEDIGAP for free, no-pressure guidance from a licensed agent.
Medicare coverage for short term rehab
Medicare Part A covers short term rehab in a skilled nursing facility when you have a qualifying inpatient hospital stay of at least three consecutive days and a doctor orders skilled care. Medicare pays the full cost for days 1-20. For days 21-100, you pay a daily coinsurance ($209.50 per day in 2025) unless a Medigap plan covers it. After day 100, Medicare coverage ends. A Medigap policy can eliminate that coinsurance - call 1-800-MEDIGAP to compare plans in your area.
