Medicare covers wheelchairs as durable medical equipment when you meet the rules. Here's how to get one covered.
How does Medicare cover wheelchairs?
Medicare Part B covers wheelchairs and scooters as durable medical equipment (DME) when your doctor certifies you need one to move around inside your home because of a health condition. You'll need a face-to-face exam and a written order from your doctor. Manual wheelchairs, power wheelchairs, and power-operated scooters can all be covered, with power equipment requiring proof that you can't use a manual chair safely. You pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount after your Part B deductible, and you must get the equipment from a supplier enrolled in Medicare. Depending on the item, Medicare may rent or buy it. What you pay and how to lower your cost
Under Original Medicare you pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount for a covered wheelchair after your Part B deductible, and Medicare pays 80%. For a power wheelchair, that 20% can be a significant sum. A Medigap (Medicare Supplement) plan can pay some or all of that coinsurance, reducing your out-of-pocket cost. It's also important to use a supplier that accepts Medicare assignment, otherwise you could pay more. In some areas, competitive bidding affects which suppliers you can use.
