Medicare covers a wide range of diabetes supplies across different parts. Here's what's covered and where.
What diabetic supplies does Medicare Part B cover?
Medicare Part B covers diabetes testing supplies and equipment as durable medical equipment. This includes blood sugar (glucose) monitors, blood sugar test strips, lancets and lancet devices, and glucose control solutions. You typically pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount after your Part B deductible, and you must use a Medicare-enrolled supplier. Part B also covers diabetes self-management training and, for those who qualify, therapeutic shoes or inserts. The amount of test strips and lancets covered depends on whether you use insulin. Using a supplier that accepts Medicare assignment keeps your costs lower. Call 1-800-MEDIGAP at 1-800-633-4427 to understand your diabetes coverage.
Insulin and supplies under Part D
Insulin you inject and supplies like syringes, needles, alcohol swabs, and gauze are generally covered under Medicare Part D (prescription drug coverage), not Part B. A major benefit: covered insulin is capped at $35 for a month's supply under Part D, and there's no deductible on it. Insulin used with a Medicare-covered insulin pump is instead covered under Part B as durable medical equipment. To get the insulin cap and supply coverage, you need a Part D plan or a Medicare Advantage plan with drug coverage. Going without can mean higher costs and a late penalty.
