A common myth is that Medicare is free at 65. Here is the honest breakdown of what you actually pay.
What parts of Medicare are free?
Part A is premium-free for most people, those who or whose spouse paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years. That is the closest Medicare comes to free, and even then you owe a $1,736 deductible per benefit period in 2026 (CMS). Everything else has a cost: Part B carries the standard $202.90 monthly premium, Part D plans have their own premiums, and a MEDIGAP supplement adds a premium too. So while one piece is premium-free, Medicare as a whole is not. Call 1-800-MEDIGAP to see your true costs.
Can I get help paying for Medicare?
Yes. If your income and resources are limited, several programs can dramatically cut or eliminate your Medicare costs. Medicare Savings Programs can pay your Part B premium and sometimes deductibles and coinsurance. The Extra Help program lowers Part D drug costs. Full Medicaid can cover most remaining gaps for dual eligibles. These programs can save thousands of dollars a year but require you to apply. A licensed agent at 1-800-MEDIGAP can check whether you qualify and help you enroll, all at no charge.
