Original Medicare is the traditional, government-run path. Here is how it works and what you should pair with it.
What is Original Medicare?
Original Medicare is the traditional fee-for-service program run directly by the federal government, consisting of Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance). Its biggest advantage is freedom: you can use any doctor, specialist, or hospital in the country that accepts Medicare, with no networks and no referrals needed. This makes it ideal for people who travel, split time between states, or want their choice of providers. It does not include drug coverage or an out-of-pocket cap, which is where supplemental plans come in. Call 1-800-MEDIGAP to build out your coverage.
What does Original Medicare not include?
Original Medicare leaves three big gaps. First, it does not cover most prescription drugs, so you need a separate Part D plan. Second, it has no annual out-of-pocket maximum, meaning the 20% Part B coinsurance can grow without limit during a serious illness. Third, it excludes routine dental, vision, hearing, and long-term care. To close the cost gap, most people add a Medicare Supplement (MEDIGAP) plan, which pairs only with Original Medicare. A licensed agent at 1-800-MEDIGAP can help you complete the picture.
